With a theoretical aproach originating from the work of Raymond Williams, the keyword essay is a method for analyzing terms that appear stable but are in fact historically layered and contested. Williams treated keywords as entry points into broader social and intellectual formations, showing how shifts in meaning track changes in culture, power, and ideology.
This project takes up that method while situating it more broadly within a Burkean framework. Drawing on Kenneth Burke, it treats keywords not only as indicators of change but as instruments that actively shape perception. Terms do more than simply carry meaning; they organize attention and structure what can become intelligible. Within a larger investigation of terministic screens, the keyword essay functions as a way to analyze how language participates in the construction of reality.
